Abstract

This article offers a theoretical debate regarding the origins of cannibalism based on the writings of Christopher Columbus. The manner in which the cannibal was constructed is of vital importance to understand the arguments later used to justify not only the conquest of the Caribbean but also to legitimize the stigmatization of Amerindian groups accused of consuming human flesh.
