Abstract
This essay examines the complex process of adopting freedoms of the press in what had been until that moment the New Kingdom of Granada. Between 808 and 1815, a period of intense political mutations, the freedom of speech and the press were conceded though with restrictions. There was also the rhetorical inheritance that served as a common repertoire among the main political and educated figures of the period. The transition from an Enlightenment-based press to one that expressed political opinions was evident during these years. La Bagatela, published by Antonio Nariño, was one example of this transition.
