Abstract

According to the national building code NSR-10, the cities of Bogotá and Medellín have the same seismic design coefficients Aa and Av that, in a first approach, would indicate the same seismic hazard level. However, the selection of the design return period corresponds to an arbitrary decision and equal hazard values for these two cities are just a mere coincidence because seismicity in each case is influenced by completely different seismo-tectonic environments. The comparison of the seismic risk results from a physical perspective allows identifying the influence of seismogenetic sources, local site effects and physical vulnerability in said analysis.
