“The Place Where No One Gives Up”: Masculinities in the CrossFit World of Córdoba

Abstract
This article derives from a broader ethnographic study conducted between January 2019 and March 2020 in various CrossFit facilities in Córdoba, Argentina. The research examined how CrossFit—aligned with certain contemporary aesthetics and sensibilities—became central to the life paths of those who turned into enthusiasts, athletes, and franchise-owning entrepreneurs. Participant observation involved the researcher also becoming a CrossFit practitioner, in order to reconstruct the everyday experience in these spaces and the ways in which meanings about the body were produced. Gender and sexuality issues emerged pervasively throughout the study. The article focuses on how masculinities are constructed in these spaces. While the figure of the strong, authoritarian man held a central place in the CrossFit imaginary, it intersected with ideals of self-improvement and body care tied to neoliberal sensibilities. At the same time, the appropriation of these meanings by women and gay men challenged dominant body models and opened space for other gender expressions. The CrossFit gym thus appeared as an erotically charged environment, where bodily display, codes of seduction, and peer relationships reproduced normative patterns but also enabled experiences that questioned and reshaped them. In this sense, the article contributes to sociocultural studies of sport and gender, showing how CrossFit functions as a privileged arena for observing diverse masculinities in contemporary Argentina.
