Abstract

The relationships and contrast in the practice of Anthropology in Colombia and the metropolitan countries within a context of globalization was the main issue of the symposium “Metropolitan and Peripheral Anthropologies: Encounters and Nonencounters” (10 th Congress of Anthropology in Colombia, Manizales, September 22-26, 2003). I take this opportunity to state my argument based upon the anthropologies of Mexico and Brazil of the 1960’s. The argument is that there is a close relationship between the anthropological and theorical practices and the commitment to the anthropologists has meant that the theoretical work has a critical bent that attempts to account for the disturbing presence of the Other.
