Cuba and the Newspapers of the Spanish Atlantic: The Supply of Printed News from Spain to the Americas, 1764-1775

Abstract
Objective/context: During the second half of the eighteenth century, Cuba became the main distribution hub for printed news to New Spain, Guatemala, and Tierra Firme. From 1764 onward, the postal service in Cuba was authorized to distribute three of the main newspapers published in Spain: Gazeta de Madrid, Mercurio Histórico y Político, and Guía de Forasteros. This group of publications, known as prints,
compiled news from around the world. My goal is to examine the material conditions, actors, and political factors that allowed Cuba to distribute these prints. Methodology: This study conducts a documentary analysis of mostly unpublished information related to the postal services of Cuba and La Coruña. This material records the flow and conditions under which Cuba served as a hub for receiving and redistributing printed news. For the analysis, I have selected the first decade when postal services began handling the distribution of prints as the timeframe for this study. Originality: So far, historiography has mainly analyzed the content of periodic publications, but not the circumstances surrounding their distribution, including
mechanisms such as postal services. This study also argues that Cuba served as a hub for redistributing newspapers carrying news from Europe, Africa, and Asia. Conclusions: The findings help broaden the his-
toriographic understanding of why the Caribbean, especially Cuba, played a key role in delivering global news to the Americas, and how postal services established by the Crown supported the dissemination of knowledge during the period leading up to the “era of revolutions.”
