Editorial Policy

Kōbai is a biannual journal published by the Japan Center and the School of Arts and Humanities at Universidad de los Andes, Colombia. Its aim is to disseminate interdisciplinary and rigorous content, the result of a critical and sensitive research process that invites a broad audience to reflect on and discuss the place of Japan in Colombia and Hispanic America. The journal accepts popular science articles —that is, texts that present and explain facts, concepts, ideas, or discoveries, using clear, concise, creative language accessible to a general audience— in Spanish, English, and Japanese, from specialized authors. The editorial support team translates into Spanish the articles written in English or Japanese that are selected for publication.

Calls for submissions will specify the deadlines for open or themed article submissions. In any case, the articles —regardless of the type of call— must be clearly related to Japan or to the relations between Japan, Colombia, and Hispanic America. In exceptional cases, the journal may include translations of articles previously published in languages other than Spanish, as long as their relevance to one of the six thematic axes and the journal’s discussions is recognized. Contributions may be accompanied by images —illustrations or photographs— for which the author must hold publication rights. If no images are provided, the journal reserves the right to illustrate or select images to accompany the article. This decision will be communicated to the author via email.

Editorial Process

Kōbai has an Editorial Team composed of members of the Japan Studies Research Group within the School of Arts and Humanities. The group consists of students, professors, and alumni from Universidad de los Andes, as well as students and professionals from other Colombian institutions. Once the articles and/or images are received, the Editorial Team will evaluate their compliance with the requirements and guidelines stated in this document or in the call for submissions and will make a selection. If necessary, the article will be reviewed by members of the Advisory Committee, which is made up of professors from Universidad de los Andes or professors affiliated with Japan-related studies at other institutions. All submissions are subject to plagiarism detection tools.

Submissions must be made through the Uniandes Journals platform. Approval by the Editorial Team will be communicated to the author through a message of acceptance, acceptance with revisions, or rejection, sent via email. Once the revised document and/or images are received and the changes are evaluated, the author will be informed of the result by email. During the editing process, the Editorial Team may consult with authors to clarify questions and reserves the right to make style corrections to the text when deemed necessary.

The Editorial Committee will determine whether an article/image will be published and in which issue it will appear.

Submission and Selection Criteria for Texts

Submission and Selection Criteria for Images

The journal also accepts images —paintings, illustrations, photographs, or other visual proposals— of free theme and original authorship. Authors are encouraged to contribute images to accompany their articles. Images must meet the following criteria:

Note: Illustrators submitting contributions are asked to refrain from using kanji or Japanese calligraphy.

Publication Acceptance Guidelines

Once the document and/or image are accepted for publication, the author must sign an authorization granting Universidad de los Andes the rights to include their article in the digital version of Kōbai. If the author later wishes to include the article in another publication, they must request written authorization from the Editorial Committee and clearly cite Kōbai as the original publication.
