Abstract
This work develops a method to compare the energy expenses between sequential (reaction-separation) and simultaneous (reactive distillation) configurations, analyzing the internal and external process flows. As example was used the reaction of the type A + B ⇄ C + D with saturation temperatures ΤAσ < ΤBσ < ΤCσ < ΤDσ. The results are discussed based on the residual curves for the industrial case of trans-esterification of methyl acetate with propyl formiate to obtain propyl acetate and methyl formiate.
