Editorial Policy

The journal seeks to publish the results of research from both national and international universities and research centers. In this sense, the journal is aimed at economists, researchers and professionals in related areas to economics and social sciences. It considers unpublished papers related to economic and social issues of economic development, as well as contributions to theoretical, applied economics and quantitative methods, paying special attention to studies about Colombia and Latin America.

The Journal is under the license Creative Commons ( No comercial 2.5 by-nc-nd). Authors are copyright owners, without restriction and also retain publication rights without any restriction. Every article published has a DOI (digital object identifier) and it should be cited by authors and users of contents, as well as the short title of the journal: DESARRO.SOC.

At present, the journal is published three times a year (february-march, june-july, and october-november). One of the yearly editions is a special issue whose objective is to develop a specific economic area with wide relevance. Special issues published so far include editions on social preferences, poverty and inequality (2006), social and welfare economics (2007), applied microeconomics (2007), informal labor (2008), household economics (2009), macro-economic crisis (2011), impact evaluation (2012), a special edition in honor of Miguel Urrutia (2013), education (2014) , economics & environment (2017), 40 years of the journal Desarrollo y Sociedad (2019) and Economy and SDG´s (2020).

Once the articles are submited the authors will be immediately notified and the results of the evaluation will be reported within a maximum period of four months.The articles submitted to Desarrollo y Sociedad are firstly reviewed by an anti-plagiarism software called Turnitin, then are reviewed by the Editor. Based on academic quality and originality criteria, the editor decides on whether the articles can continue the process or not. Once accepted in this first stage, articles are sent to two anonymous national or foreign referees (double-blind peer review). In order to speed up this process, authors must suggest at least two potential external reviewers. Reviewers have the possibility of declaring conflict of interest.

The editorial team will let the author(s) know the final decision on whether their article will be published by Desarrollo y Sociedad or not, based on the referees’ concept (which is sent to the authors) and the editor’s own opinion, the journal does not charge money for any process or publication or for shipments.s. According to the editor, the Journal may also publish methodological notes, book reviews and brief commentaries on published articles, along with the response of the author(s) of the original article. It is editorial policy to publish articles whose computational details, either mathematical or statistical, are available so that others can attempt its replication. The editor decides whether such details should be published or not.

All of the journal articles are available online under open access and it is available immediately upon publication, they can be accessed freely from the web page of the journal at: https://revistas.uniandes.edu.co/index.php/dys. For the digital publishing process the journal uses the platform Atyphon.

Finally, we publish articles in both languajes: spanish and english. We recognice the different scopes of those languajes. Nevertheless, today the translations made by A.I.'s do not contain the cuality to become a valid translation of an academic text. That is why we invite the different autors to avoid using those tools, unless they would be used with an expert's support.

The journal has been fully funded by the Center of Studies on Development Economics (CEDE) from the Department of Economics at Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) since 1979.
