Abstract

This article studies Fernando Ortiz’s critique of the Día de la Raza as an example of his engagement with issues central to the international anthropological discussion of the interwar period (1918-1945), notably the rethinking of race and culture. It argues that Ortiz moved away from defining Latin American culture based on philology toward an anthropological concept of culture with an emphasis on transculturation processes and the critique of ideologies.
