Resumo

Objective/context: This article analyzes the relationship between young people and politics, as well as their views on democracy in Latin America, focusing specifically on Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico—countries that together account for 70 % of the region’s population and exhibit diverse political histories and socioeconomic trajectories. Methodology: Data were obtained from four representative surveys, each consisting of 2,500 online interviews, conducted between December 2023 and July 2024. These surveys included questions related to the topics discussed in this article. We define the youth age range as 18 to 35 years, based on their entry into the labor market following the end of Latin America’s commodity boom (2011–2012). Conclusions: Within this age group, compared to older generations, there is a higher prevalence of values and opinions that we characterize as neo-authoritarian. According to Altemeyer, classic conservative-authoritarian ideology combines cultural conservatism (such as machismo and homophobia), xenophobia, punitivism, and a weaker democratic commitment. By contrast, our research reveals an ideological configuration marked by stronger punitivism and democratic detachment, yet greater secularization and fewer anti-immigrant sentiments. Originality: This is the first comparative study based on representative surveys that examined the relationship between youth, politics, and democracy in Latin America during the post–commodity boom period. We identify a new ideological configuration that we call neo-authoritarian, and propose an interpretation based on the shared experiences of a generation coming of age in the aftermath of the boom, amid a comparatively worse economic context than that of the previous cohort.
