Abstract
This paper explores the impact that Latin American preferential trade agreements (PTAs) have had on foreign direct investment (FDI) flows, after controlling for a range of structural, institutional, political and other variables. Especial attention is given to FDI diversion and creation -both external and internal-generated by the most important PTAs. The objectives are persued by making a panel data analysis using a gravity model with data on FDI from OECD and ECLAC, covering the period between 1980 and 1998.
