Abstract

This article is an empirical study about the inequalities among racial groups in the cities of Cali, Cartagena and Bogotá, starting from the valuation of the importance of the social origins and the individual achievement in the process of social stratification. For this proposal, it is used the sample of the ENH, DANE, stage 110 of December of 2000. The outcomes suggest the presence of strong inequalities, in terms of the educational achievement and the socio-occupational status for the three cities, between the afrocolombians and the non afrocolombians, but with interesting differences by city and according to birth cohort effects for those mentioned cities. The unfavorable outcomes obtained by the afrocolombians in the process of social stratification for the three cities not only take place because to have parents with lower education (and for the same reason poorer), but also for the presence of accumulative disadvantages that they could be interpreted as discrimination by race and gender, considering different cohorts of birth.
