Against the Spectacle of Beginning: The Memory of the Women Cooks of Paseo del Río in Barrancabermeja

Abstract

In this article, I reflect on the process of memory construction among the women cooks of Paseo del Río in the context of their eviction from the banks of the Magdalena river in Barrancabermeja. Based on images taken on December 31, 2022, during the inauguration of the Distrito Malecón architectural renovation, and the absence of the women cooks in this scene, I aim to interpret this erasure as a manifestation of postcolonial power in an oil enclave city. The analysis of the scene reveals how the women cooks interrupt the spectacle of power and its representational mechanisms, as well as the entrepreneurial logic that informs the mayor’s discourse.
