Between metaphors and allegories: The notion of identity during the third decade of the Twentieth Century in the context of Latin American cultural journals

Abstract

In Latin American cultural journals of the nineteen twenties metaphors were often relied on to communicate the notion of identity. This text explores the use of this literary figure as a narrative device deployed in order to identify the social environment in the continent during the first decades of the Twentieth Century. The text shows how in the intellectual environment of the time creation, sarcasm and contrasted imagination played a larger role than rigorous, logical or academic reflection. During the period under study rhetorical persuasion prevailed as a form of presentation of the avatars of the ambiguous social reality. Some of the inaugural texts of the journals were conceived as metaphor of metaphors and reached the level of narrative complexity that characterizes allegories.
