Abstract

In this work I analyze The Artist and the Photograph, an artwork by Joan Fontcuberta. In the first part, I examine the strategies that Fontcuberta employs, in his purported role as a curator, to create a narrative for the images he is presenting. Secondly, I consider how these exhibitions turn the art of a few artists of Catalan origin into an art that represents the Spanish nation as a whole. Finally, I analyze how Fontcuberta infiltrates various cultural institutions to reflect on the role they play and how they relate to other social phenomena, such as tourism and the entertainment industry.

Keywords: Joan Fontcuberta, photography, nationalism, tourism, performativity, curating
