H-ART. Revista de historia, teoría y crítica de arte is an open-access publication hosted and funded by the Department of Art History and the School of Arts and Humanities at Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia). The journal is dedicated to disseminating research, analysis, and critical perspectives on the history, theory, and criticism of art. It publishes original, unpublished contributions arising from research, scholarly reflection, or review in the fields of art history, theory, and criticism, by both national and international authors. H-ART is open to a plurality of ideas and as a forum for meaningful discussion and reflection on art.
The journal publishes one open-topic issue and two themed issues (dossiers) per year; the latter are edited by one or more guest editors. Content is published in Spanish, English, or Portuguese.
Circulation
H-ART is published in both digital and print formats and releases three issues per year (January–April, May–August, and September–December). The journal offers three publication modalities for academic articles: just accepted, ahead of print, and publication within the corresponding issue. Just accepted articles are those that have been submitted to the journal, undergone peer review, and been approved for publication; for these texts, the journal publishes the metadata (title, author[s], abstract, and keywords). Ahead of print articles are manuscripts that have been peer-reviewed, accepted, and approved by the editorial team and are available in their final version; they are published online in advance of the issue to which they will later be assigned. Finally, articles are published within a specific issue in accordance with the journal’s regular publication schedule.
Thematic Scope
H-ART’s thematic scope focuses on the fields of art history, critical essays, and art theory, as well as related areas that engage in dialogue with these disciplines. The journal welcomes studies on visual and material culture, cultural heritage, museology, curatorship, and artistic practices across diverse historical and geographical contexts. While it places particular emphasis on art history in Colombia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, it also publishes research that, from a range of perspectives, contributes to a broader understanding of artistic phenomena worldwide.
Content Types
The journal publishes the following types of content:
- Research Articles. Original, unpublished texts presenting research findings, as well as critical analyses of artworks, documents, and phenomena in the field of art and its history.
- Invited Contribution. Original, unpublished texts by distinguished specialists offering relevant and current perspectives on the theme of the dossier. Commissioned by the editorial committee of each issue, this contribution is intended to enrich and deepen the discussion proposed for the dossier.
- Critical essays. Texts that engage the critical experience of art through an essayistic and affective mode of writing that extends beyond the limits of the traditional review.
- Art History Questionnaire. Sets of questions addressed to art historians, artists, curators, researchers, theorists, professors, and other professionals working in related fields.
- Editorial. Introductory notes that contextualize each issue and draw attention to specific aspects deserving readers’ consideration.
- “Beyond the Frame.” Conceived as a space for engagement with artists, curators, and creators who interact experimentally with the themes of each dossier. This section explores, complements, and enriches the thematic issues by addressing their topics through alternative and innovative formats. It reflects the ongoing evolution of art within an increasingly technological and diverse landscape. Its content is published digitally on H-ART+.
- Interviews. Conversations with artists, curators, critics, and art historians. Some interviews are published in video format, while others appear as edited and transcribed conversations.
- Reflections. Short texts presenting considerations, commentary, or personal approaches to critical issues in art. This section is designed to foster debate, share ideas in development, and propose perspectives that expand the scope of each issue. Some contributions are published digitally on the H-ART+ blog.
- Reviews. Critical and reflective texts on recent publications and exhibitions in the art world, with particular attention to Latin America and the Caribbean.
H-ART+
H-ART+ is an alternative platform for H-ART. Revista de historia, teoría y crítica de arte. It was created to encourage a more open and dynamic dialogue and to broaden the journal’s reach by connecting academic research with wider and more diverse audiences. The platform features content such as blog posts, reviews, interviews, critical essays, news, and the “Beyond the Frame” section, which engages with art from multiple perspectives through alternative formats. Offered in a range of languages and expressive registers, these materials extend and enrich the journal’s scholarly content, introducing greater flexibility and contemporary relevance. H-ART+ provides a space for experimentation, for bringing new voices into view, and for broadening the journal’s scope, consolidating its role as a key forum in debates on art and visual culture.
Editorial Guidelines
Submission and Editorial Review
The journal operates according to the following guidelines:
- The journal issues calls for submissions with specified deadlines; the terms of each call are announced here.
- Articles and other texts must be submitted exclusively through the journal’s editorial management system (OJS).
- Authors must consult the Resources for Authors page to ensure that their submission complies with the journal’s requirements.
- Manuscripts must not be under simultaneous consideration elsewhere.
All manuscripts submitted in response to the journal’s calls are screened using plagiarism detection software. If evidence of total or partial plagiarism is found—including failure to provide proper citation—the manuscript will not proceed to peer review, and the authors will be notified of the reason for its rejection.
Additional and specific guidelines according to content type are outlined below:
Research articles
- The journal’s editorial team evaluates the relevance and suitability of submitted content for publication in an art history journal (including objective, theoretical framework, methodology, conclusions, and bibliography). It also verifies compliance with the basic requirements (citation style and formal presentation) as well as the journal’s editorial and ethical policies, available in the Resources for Authors section.
- The journal screens submitted content using the plagiarism detection tool Turnitin.
- Authors will be notified within a maximum of six months from the date of submission whether their manuscript will be published. If the review process exceeds this timeframe, the editorial team will inform the authors accordingly.
Reviews, Interviews, Critical Essays, and Art History Questionnaire
- The journal commissions reviews, interviews, critical essays, and questionnaires for publication in its annual issues.
- These materials are published in advance on the journal’s alternative digital platform, H-ART+; some will later be assigned to a specific issue and published in both print and digital formats on the journal’s official website.
"Beyond the Frame"
- For each new dossier or thematic issue, the guest editors propose a specific approach to the “Beyond the Frame” section and determine whether it will involve an open call or the participation of an invited contributor. In the case of an open call, creators and curators wishing to participate must submit images, videos of artworks, or other visual expressions that creatively engage with the theme of the issue or dossier, in accordance with the guidelines established by the editorial committee. Proposals must include a brief description of the work, a short author biography, images of the work, and a brief profile.
- Submissions to this section are reviewed by an internal editorial committee, which will determine their suitability for publication.
- All materials must comply with the journal’s editing guidelines and editorial and ethical policies, available in the Resources for Authors section.
- Authors will be notified within a maximum of two months whether their content will be published.
Peer review
Manuscripts preselected for the Research Articles category are sent for external peer review. The evaluators’ reports inform the final editorial decision regarding acceptance or rejection.
- Manuscripts that pass the initial screening enter a double-blind peer review process and are evaluated by two external reviewers. Reviewers are selected on the basis of their academic trajectory and the alignment of their expertise with the subject of the submission.
- The journal may reject an article on the basis of a single negative review, provided that the evaluation is rigorously and thoroughly substantiated.
- When reports are favorable, authors receive detailed feedback from the reviewers and are expected to incorporate the suggested revisions. The editorial team may also request additional adjustments if structural concerns have been identified.
- Authors are required to submit a revised version of their manuscript within approximately two weeks, together with a brief statement explaining how they addressed the reviewers’ comments and, where applicable, the reasons for not implementing specific suggestions.
- The final decision regarding publication is made on the basis of this revised submission. Once the updated version has been reviewed, the author will be notified of the outcome by email.
- Peer reviewing format: Spanish, English, Portuguese.
Editorial Process
The editorial team determines whether an article will be published and assigns it to a specific issue. Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, the editorial process begins and proceeds according to the following guidelines:
- Throughout copyediting and stylistic revision, authors may be contacted to clarify specific issues. While the journal consults authors when questions arise, the editorial team retains the right to introduce minor corrections where necessary.
- Article metadata are reviewed to ensure translation accuracy, and revisions are made as necessary. The journal also provides Portuguese translations of the metadata.
- Publication requires authors to sign the Authorization for Use of Intellectual Property document, through which they grant the Department of Art History, School of Arts and Humanities, Universidad de los Andes, the economic rights (reproduction, public communication, transformation, and distribution) necessary to publish the work in H-ART, in both print and electronic formats).
- Responsibility for securing permissions for third-party materials (images, tables, graphs, illustrations, maps, diagrams, photographs, etc.) rests with the authors. They must ensure that all required authorizations are in place prior to publication.
- Before publication, authors receive the typeset version of their text for a final review.

Editorial Structure and Responsibilities
H-ART’s editorial body consists of the editorial team—comprising an editor, an editorial manager, and an administrative editorial assistant—along with an editorial board and a scientific committee. Together, these bodies ensure the quality, relevance, and standards of the journal’s content.
The editorial team is responsible for making decisions regarding publication, proposing themes for issues, upholding academic and editorial quality standards, overseeing indexing and content dissemination processes, and managing the operational aspects of publication. It also appoints the scholars who serve on the editorial board and scientific committee, taking into account international quality standards, their expertise in the journal’s thematic areas, and recommendations from current committee members. The team convenes regular board meetings and conducts consultations with members as necessary.
The primary role of the Editorial Board is to ensure that the journal’s editorial decisions remain aligned with its mission and declared thematic areas. The board periodically reviews the journal’s overall development, assesses previously published topics, and proposes new areas that merit attention. It also evaluates proposals for thematic issues, determining their relevance and timeliness, and, when appropriate, may provide an advisory opinion on specific submissions or suggest potential reviewers.
Board members are distinguished scholars affiliated with leading institutions worldwide. They may be nominated either by current Board members or by the journal’s editorial team.
With regard to H-ART+, the board may support the editorial team by suggesting content, identifying national and international academic events whose debates, presentations, or outcomes—partial or final—could be included, facilitating contact for these contributions, and proposing new avenues to be explored within the section.
The scientific committee provides academic guidance and supports the journal’s international standing. Its members—recognized for their scholarly careers and contributions to art history and theory—occasionally advise on emerging research trends and support the editorial team on specific matters when needed.
They further support the journal’s inclusion and consolidation in indexing systems and enhance its visibility through dissemination within their academic and institutional networks.
Ethics Policy
The journal upholds an ethics policy that defines the responsibilities and standards of conduct for editors, authors, and peer reviewers. The complete policy may be accessed here: https://revistas.uniandes.edu.co/index.php/hart/ethical-policies.
