Abstract
“In 2025, Japan marks forty years since its ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which it signed in 1985. This anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on the origins and evolution of Japan’s commitment to gender equality in the international arena. This article therefore examines the development of policies addressing gender equality in Japan from 1990 to 2024. Although Japan is widely recognized for its technological leadership and cultural heritage, it has faced persistent challenges in achieving equity between women and men.”
