Permanent Liminality and Interwoven Forms of Violence: Experiences of Colombian Migrant Women in Asturias, Spain

Abstract

This study examines how the forms of violence experienced by Colombian migrant women in Asturias are reshaped throughout their migratory trajectories. Using an intersectional feminist perspective, it shows that migration does not break with the violences present in their places of origin; instead, it gives rise to new forms of harm that connect to earlier ones, forming a continuum. Within this framework, the concept of permanent liminality is introduced to describe a structural condition of chronic marginality that keeps these women at the edges of citizenship and social recognition. The research draws on grounded theory and is based on the life histories of migrant women, attending to their experiences in their country of origin, during the migratory journey, and in the country of destination. The approach adopted places the body at the center of the analysis, treating it as a living territory where multiple forms of violence become materially, affectively, and epistemically inscribed. The findings show that these violences constitute systems of discrimination and exclusion that operate as a form of symbolic, material, and epistemic injustice. The study offers an original and critical analytical framework that approaches migration as an embodied and situated experience. Using the expanded concept of permanent liminality as an organizing axis, it proposes the notion of intersectional embodied violence to illuminate how interwoven violences take shape in their embodied, cumulative, and ongoing dimensions.
