Author Guidelines
Submission and review of articles
- All articles submitted in a language other than the authors' native language should undergo a review by a certified translator prior to submission.
- Articles must be submitted through the OJS platform during the open call periods, which can be accessed through the journal's website.
- Articles submitted to Colombia Internacional cannot be concurrently under consideration for publication elsewhere.
- Colombia Internacional will not publish articles, visual essays, interviews, or any other document with a DOI identification number, by the same author within a two-year period due to the high volume of content received in each call.
- After the submission period ends, the Internal Selection Committee assesses the relevance of the submitted article and checks that it adheres to the guidelines and editorial rules set for authors. This assessment enables the Committee to determine which articles will be evaluated by external peer reviewers.
- Colombia Internacional will notify the author of the status of their submission within a maximum period of six months.
- Selected articles are subject to plagiarism checks through a specialized software. If any form of plagiarism is discovered, the article will not be reviewed and the authors will be informed of the rejection.
- Articles are evaluated by two anonymous reviewers in a double-blind process. The reviewers are selected based on their academic background, and at least one of them must have an international institutional affiliation.
- The article will be rejected if a single negative evaluation is received with strong arguments.
- The authors are notified of the results of the reviews, a decision of rejection or approval, along with any modifications suggested by the referees and the journal.
- The author must make changes to their article using the "Track Changes" tool and include a written explanation of how they have addressed the suggestions made by the reviewers and the journal. Upon receiving this information, the journal will make its final decision on the publication of the article and inform the author in writing.
- The articles approved for dossiers are published in the corresponding issue, and those with a free theme are published in the issue and year defined by the Colombia Internacional publishing cycle.
- If another written or digital journal wants to republish an article that has already been published in Colombia Internacional, it should first reach out to the author to express its interest and then obtain permission from the journal, which has the final say. The details of the original publication must be prominently displayed on the first page of the reprint. Colombia Internacional does not allow the republication of its content until three years after its initial publication.
Editorial process
- Authors are consulted during the editing and proofreading process to solve questions. The Editorial Team reserves the right to make minor corrections.
- During the process, authors are contacted through the OJS platform. In particular cases, e-mail is used.
- Articles submitted to Colombia Internacional are reviewed for the quality of their title, abstract, and keywords translations. If the translations are deemed inadequate, the journal will provide its own translations.
- Articles that involve work with communities or individuals must provide proof of adherence to an ethics protocol and obtaining informed consent from participants.
- For photographic series featuring individuals with recognizable faces, the authors must present evidence of obtaining the informed consent of the subjects depicted. If minors are portrayed, consent should be obtained from their parents or guardians.
- The authors must give written consent to the University to authorize the reproduction, public communication, transformation, and distribution of articles, for the purpose of including their work in a specific issue of Colombia Internacional.
- When the article is ready for publication, it will be drafted according to the journal’s design and layout parameters.
- Colombia Internacional is responsible for disseminating the digital version of its content through various repositories, databases, and indexers that it is hosted in.
Article Submission Guidelines
It is necessary for articles to meet the specific requirements set by Colombia Internacional at the time of submission. If articles do not adhere to the general publishing standards, and those concerning referencing and bibliography, they will be automatically rejected due to their failure to meet the editorial standards.
- Articles should be submitted through the OJS platform, the link to which is included on the journal’s website when a call for papers is open.
- The manuscript should be presented in a file compatible with Word, on a letter size page (21.59 cm x 27.54 cm), with 3 cm margins, Times New Roman font, type size 12, single-spaced, with 0 point separation between paragraphs and justified text. Footnotes should be in Times New Roman font, type size 10, single-spaced and justified text.
- The manuscript should not exceed 10,000 words in length, including the title, abstract, keywords, footnotes, reference list and annexes.
- The firt page must include the title and an extended abstract that includes objective/context of the article, its methodology, conclusions, and its originality. These four components should be highlighted in bold. Extended abstract should be an approximate length of 250 words.
- The authors should include a list of 4 to 7 keywords below the abtsract. It is recommended to use Unesco's Thesaurus to select these keywords as it will help in relating the author to the themes and substantive terms of their research in the annual thematic indexes of the journal. It is not necessary to mention if the terms from the Thesaurus or the author's own terms are used.
- The article must be completely anonymous in terms of content and the file’s name and metadata.
- Include the following in a separate file: academic qualifications, institutional affiliations, current position, ongoing studies, research group to which the author(s) belongs (if applicable), last two publications and email. This file should also contain information as to the origins of the article. When it is the result of research, it should include information about the research project of which it is part and the name of the funding institution.
- After the initial presentation page, the article should begin. Remember to write the document following the grammatical and syntactic rules of the language in which it is written. Use academic language that is accessible to different audiences.
- The author’s name should not appear in the submitted paper.
- Include DOI identification numbers in the reference list for all applicable references.
- Information about the author(s) should be included in a separate document with the following data: complete name, nationality, mailing address, academic degrees, current institutional affiliation, research groups, lines of research and the latest two publications in books and/or journals. This document should also indicate the origin of the article and the name of the financing institution, if applicable.
- Name table, charts, maps, diagrams and photographs as “figures”, which should be numbered, in ascending order, and identified and referenced in the text with captions. In the initial version uploaded to OJS, the images will be low resolution. If the article is accepted, they should be sent as .jpg or .tiff in high resolution, that is, at 300 pixels per inch (ppi). Authors assume responsibility for providing high resolution files or files in their original format. It is the authors’ responsibility to obtain and bestow permissions to publish images that require them.
Editing rules
- Major divisions within the body of the text (main sections) should be numbered with Arabic numerals, except for the introduction and the conclusion; the subdivisions (secondary sections) should be numbered with lowercase letters. Each paragraph should be indented.
- Terms in Latin and words from languages other than the one in which the article is written should appear in italics. Excessive use of italics throughout the text should be avoided.
- Spelling rules of the language in which the text is written should be kept in mind.
- The first time that an acronym or an abbreviation is used, it should be placed in parenthesis immediately after the complete form; the acronym or the abbreviation should be used alone on subsequent occasions.
- Quotations that exceed four lines should be long quotation format, single-spaced, type size 11, with reduced margins.
- Footnotes should be numbered with Arabic numerals.
- The exact place where each chart/table/image/diagram is to be inserted into the text must be clearly indicated.
- All references used in the text must be presented at the end of the article. The bibliographical list should include the references that have been quoted in the text (do not include works not mentioned in the text). They must be numbered and placed in alphabetical order. It is indispensable to include the complete names of the authors and/or editors in each one of the references.
- Colombia Internacional uses the Author-Date References format as outlined in the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style for presenting the quotations and references included in an article. The punctuation details required (comma, period, colon, parenthesis, etc.) and the information required should be taken into account. The bibliographical list must include the references that have been quoted in the text (in a one-to-one relation), numbered and listed in alphabetical order. It is indispensable to include the complete names of the authors and/or editors in each one of the references.
The following examples are presented to show the differences between the brief parenthetical form of citation to be used within the text (T), and the full form of citation to be used in the bibliography (B).

- Ibid, ibidem or op. cit. should not be used in these cases.
- For legal and public documents, such as cases, constitutions, statutes and other government documents, it is recommended to cite in parethesis and to include complete information (name, date of expedition, etc.) in the References at the end.
- Articles that include source files should present the references in numbered footnotes, so as to facilitate the reader’s identification of and access to the documents in the corresponding file. It is necessary to indicate the following:
- Abbreviation of the name of the file, Section, Source, vol./leg./t., f. o ff. (place, date and other relevant information). The complete name of the file, followed by its abbreviated form set in parentheses, is used the first time a file is cited; the abbreviation is used alone in subsequent citations. All primary references should be placed on a separate reference list at the end of the text, before the bibliography.
