Determinants of Timber Exploitation in Antioquia between 2006 and 2010: An Approach from the Institutions

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the institutional determinants of the forest harvesting in Antioquia between 2006 and 2010. The main hypothesis argues that informality in land tenure creates incentives to overexploit the wood resources through the omission or alteration of the institutions which regulate the forest harvesting. Thereby, in this paper it is estimated the relationship between forest harvesting in Antioquia and the property rights over land.

Methodologically, this work incorporates a fixed effects panel data model, which allows temporal and longitudinal traceability of the wood exploitation in the producing municipalities of Antioquia. The results suggest that high levels of forest harvesting occur in municipalities with high informality in land tenure due to the difficulty of organizations to enforce regulations. This article quantifies the relationship between institutions which regulate the forest harvesting and the property rights over land.
