Antigüedad y decadencia: Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema y Las rosas de Heliogábalo

Resumen

El artículo analiza la relación entre decadentismo y clasicismo en el arte victoriano a través de la pintura Las rosas de Heliogábalo (1888) de Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912), pintor holandés establecido en Inglaterra. En la historia del arte se ha presentado tradicionalmente a Alma-Tadema como un artista representativo del academicismo; si bien comparte elementos en común con esta corriente (como el uso de temas clásicos y el realismo pictórico) se puede establecer también una relación con la estética decadentista. En Las rosas de Heliogábalo se evidencia la influencia del decadentismo en la obra de Alma-Tadema, marcada por una representación de la Antigüedad como un lugar de lujo, inmoralidad, extravagancia y placer.
