Abstract

Studies on media consumption among gay men often focus on LGBTQ+ character representation in productions aimed at teenage and adult audiences (Dhoest, 2023), overlooking the reception of works intended for younger viewers. This paper seeks to retrospectively identify the processes of involvement (Wirth, 2006) of Mexican millennial gay men with the characters of the influential shōjo anime Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (Azuma et al., 1992), known in Latin America simply as Sailor Moon, which they watched during their childhood in the 1990s.

This work stems from a qualitative investigation on gay subjectivity and identity in relation to the consumption of this anime. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten individuals from the aforementioned demographic, who have considered themselves fans of the series (Jenkins, 1992) from an early age.
