Abstract
"For many, Japan is the epitome of a distant world. It was the musicians and Impressionist artists who initially forged artistic connections between East and West, following the opening to the Western world in 1868. This occurred before literature, manga, film, and anime, from the mid-20th century onwards, contributed to constructing a diverse imagery of Japanese culture. Medieval tales, temples and warriors, philosophy and religion, refinement and contemplation, all contrast with the image of a modern, demanding society striving to uphold its heritage in the age of globalization.
