Abstract

This paper is a brief presentation to three projects undertaken in Asia. The projects represent social, institutional and urban innovation in that they are alternatives in egalitarian development for slum dwellers. The value of the proposals lies in the fact that they look for realistic ways to resolve difficult situations. A number of common denominators were identified in order to ensure that the projects would be successful: ownership and land security; the efforts made to include informal tenants in the urban infrastructure networks; and housing –which for many of the solutions to become real– needs increasing and continuous improvement. The examples provide lessons regarding scarcity, housing quality and affordable housing for low-income and marginalised families. They can serve as references and models for governments, the private sector, and civil society interested in the construction of sustainable cities. Solutions and concepts applied in other parts of the world may prove to be relevant for Colombia and Latin America.
