Modern and tropical: the reinterpretation of Le Corbusier’s principles in Oscar Niemeyer’s first works

Abstract

This article analyses some aspects of Oscar Niemeyer’s early works and compares them with those of Le Corbusier. It aims to highlight how the teachings of the Swiss architect were essential for the young Brazilian in developing both his project methodology and his poetry in construction. The article details Niemeyer’s assimilation of Le Corbusier’s ideas and principles as well as his adaptation of these to the Brazilian climate, culture, and geography.
