Abstract
Phyllis Bronfman Lambert started a revolution for the role of women in architecture. The history of the origins of the Seagram building shows her to be a model cultured individual who contributed to shaping the twentieth century. She managed to immortalize the building that she helped to create in her role as a client together with the architect Mies van der Rohe. Her courage and humanist vision carved out an extraordinary manifesto that revealed the character of the modern individual and what his architect should be like. Time would prove her right: the construction of the Seagram building allowed architecture to reach a new paradigm and it changed the profile of New York as it provided a new definition of the skyscraper.
