Abstract

This paper critically analyses discourses and pedagogical practices that were developed in the School of Architecture at the Universidad de Costa Rica (Arquis) from 1971. It shows how concepts derived from computer sciences were employed to reflect on the school’s approach to design methods. This paper examines how computer sciences shaped the School’s original premise and left marks on both curricular organization and the discourses used to pedagogically address architectural problems, which continue to this day. Consequently, this article offers a perspective on the role that computer science has played as a theoretical input —and vehicle of influence— in Costa Rican architectural pedagogy.
