Hackitectura.net’s Projects for the Border, the Square, and the Situation Room

Abstract

This article offers a historical account of Hackitectura, an experimental architecture collective from Spain, through a selection of their projects developed between 2000 and 2010 in the context of what has been termed a space of flows. Created in close collaboration with social actors and movements, this collective’s projects radically imagined and experimented with the emancipatory and transformative possibilities of then-fledgling computing technologies such as wifi, streaming, and autonomous digital networks. Analyzing their interventions in spaces such as the border, the square, and the situation room, the article outlines this collective’s vision, it’s accomplishments, and its limitations.
