Editorial Policy
Dearq is an indexed publication that follows international quality, positioning, periodicity, and online availability standards. Its goal is to contribute to the dissemination of analysis, research, reflections, and critical opinions produced by the national and international scientific community on architecture, the city, and related areas. The journal is a quarterly publication (January-April, May-August, and September-December) that is published at the beginning of each period.
The journal welcomes contributions from diverse regions, emphasizing issues that highlight local realities and serve as examples for common trends Latin America. It features scholarly articles, projects, and creative works that engage with the diverse communities inhabiting urban centers and the rural landscapes that surround them. This approach prioritizes a human-centered perspective while remaining attuned to universal complexities and interconnections.
The journal publishes articles in Spanish and English (in exceptional cases, translations of articles already published in other languages are included, due to their relevance to the discussions addressed in the issue). All published articles have a DOI identification number, which must be cited by authors referencing the published content.
Journal Structure
The journal's structure is as follows: an Editorial Team composed of a Director, Editor, Editorial Manager and Designer; an Editorial Committee and a Scientific Committee whose members are evaluated every two years based on their contribution to the publication, their recognition in the field, and their visible academic output in other national and international indexed journals; and a Support Team that provides assistance, copyediting, and translation services.
Guest Editors
The Editorial Team may invite experts in their field to serve as Guest Editors for specific issues. These Editors provide the terms for the call for papers according to the theme of the issue; participate, along with the Editorial Team, in the preliminary review of the submitted content and supervise the peer review process. The Editorial Team has the final say on the acceptance or rejection of submitted articles. Guest Editors must remain available throughout the entire editorial and publication process.
Fees
The Dearq journal is affiliated with the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Universidad de los Andes, which provides financial support for its publication. Therefore, no fees are charged to authors for article submission, peer review, copyediting, or publication; nor are there any monetary charges for the printing and distribution of the journal in physical format.
Editorial Workflow
During the editorial process, the OJS platform will serve as the official communication channel between the editorial team, authors, and reviewers throughout all stages of submission, review, editing, and production. For specific inquiries, please contact us at dearq@uniandes.edu.co.
All participants in the process —the editorial team, authors, and reviewers— are required to adhere to the guidelines set forth in the journal’s Ethical Policy, which align with the international standards of good editorial practices established by organizations such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). These guidelines ensure academic integrity, confidentiality, and transparency at every stage of the process, while upholding principles of objectivity, independence, and professional responsibility.
I. Article Submission
The journal only accepts articles in Spanish or English during the call for papers periods. The dates of these calls can be found in the Call for Papers section. Authors must declare that the article is original and unpublished, has not been previously published, and complies with intellectual property rights. Additionally, the article must not be simultaneously under review or have editorial commitments with other publications.
Authors interested in submitting an article to Dearq should do so through the following link: Submit an article. The submission must comply with the specific guidelines outlined in the Publication Guidelines.
The author must also complete the following attachments:
- The Personal and Academic Information Form.
- The Originality Certificate, stating that: the article is the author's own work and has not been previously published; the article is not under parallel review nor has editorial commitments with another research journal; the author is responsible for the ideas expressed in the article, as well as its ethical suitability; the author respects the intellectual property rights of third parties.
- The Authorization for the use, reproduction, printing, and publication of material that is not owned by the author (plans, tables, graphs, maps, diagrams, photographs, etc.).
- Authorization for the use of the author's patrimonial rights (reproduction, public communication, transformation, and distribution), by signing the Authorization for the Use of Intellectual Property Rights directed to the Department of Architecture of Universidad de los Andes to include the article in the journal Dearq.
After receiving the article, the author will be notified and the editorial team will proceed with the following steps:
II. Review
Preliminary review by the editorial team
1. Check compliance with the basic requirements described in the Publication Guidelines.
2. Submit the article to a plagiarism detection tool. If plagiarism or self-plagiarism is detected, the text will be rejected, and the authors will be notified.
3. Evaluate the article, accepting or rejecting the manuscript based on the following criteria:
- Compliance with publication guidelines.
- Relevance and quality of the document in relation to the call for papers.
- Coherence and clarity of the argumentation.
- Bibliographic relevance and research support.
- Clarity of writing.
- Generation of new knowledge.
Peer Review
Any document that passes the preliminary review undergoes a double-blind peer review process.
Each article is assigned two peer reviewers for a double-blind evaluation; both the authors' and reviewers' names remain anonymous. Reviewers are selected based on their academic background, knowledge, and expertise in the subject matter of the document under review. A larger percentage of reviewers are external to Universidad de los Andes.
The evaluation results are communicated to the author within a maximum period of six months. At this stage, the Editor will issue one of the following decisions:
- Accept the document for publication without modifications.
- Accept the document for publication provided corrections are made according to the comments and observations provided.
- Reject the document for publication.
Note: Authors are encouraged to review the Evaluation Form before submitting their article.
Request for Modifications
When an article requires modifications, the author must make the requested adjustments and submit the revised article within the deadline set by the Editor. Once Dearq receives the revised article, the author will be informed of the final decision. If the second review determines that the changes have not been incorporated within the agreed deadline, the Editorial Team may decide not to publish the article.
Dearq reserves the right to make the final decision on the acceptance and publication of articles, as well as to determine the issue or edition in which they will be included.
III. Editing
Copyediting
If the text is approved, the journal will carry out copyediting and send the document to the author for review. The journal reserves the right to make minor stylistic corrections and to adjust the abstract and keywords.
Translation
Once the suggested changes during the review have been approved, it is the author's responsibility to manage the translation into English or Spanish, depending on the original language of the submitted text, and to submit the translated document within the deadline set by the editor for inclusion in the publication.
For authors submitting their original texts in English, copyediting will respect the English variant used in the article. Authors submitting their original texts in Spanish must handle the translation into U.S. English.
The journal does not accept translations made with automatic translation tools or those done by the author, unless they are bilingual and can guarantee quality. The use of professional translators is required, and in the case of self-translation, a professional proofreading is mandatory before submission. If the author needs recommendations for translators, they may contact the journal for guidance.
After receiving the translation, Dearq will verify its quality and submit it for a new round of copyediting. If the editorial team or the copyeditor deems the translation inadequate, the author will be asked to provide a revised version. If the author fails to make the required changes, the article will not be published in English, which could affect its citation potential and inclusion in various indexes.
IV. Production
The article will be typeset according to the journal's design and layout parameters. When the article is ready for publication, it will be sent to the authors for final review. Only essential corrections will be made at this stage.
