Memory and the Contemporary Art Digital Archive: the Case of the Spanish Archive of Media Art

Abstract
Taking as an example the so-called Media Art and departing from the experience of the project “Archivo Español de Media art / Spanish Archive of Media art (aema / saoma)”, this article aims to consider digital reality, contemporary artistic production, and its possibilities of archive and memory in order to approach the historiographical task of contemporary art. First section of this article is devoted to defining Media Art and its artifacts. Second section presents and describes the aema project, born from the previous experience of mideciant, with the intention of approaching the conceptual and technical characteristics that an archive of these artistic proposals must fulfill. In the third section, some of the interconnections between the concepts of memory and archive in relation to new Media Art will be outlined, to raise some of the difficulties inherent to the task of definition, memory and archiving of Media Art. Finally, last section compiles some reflections and analysis on the most pressing needs (digital restoration, documentation and story) that we believe are necessary for digital art archive projects.
