Chile and Vkhutemas Pedagogy: 100 Years After the Foundation of the Constructivist Schools

Abstract

In contrast with the centennial celebration of the founding of the Bauhaus School of Art, Design, and Architecture, that of the founding of the Russian constructivist schools, the Vkhutemas, has received much less coverage. Very little is known about the early impact of these schools on Chilean artistic pedagogy, which long preceded that of the Bauhaus. The same can be said about the pedagogical debt of the emblematic German Bauhaus with the Russian Vkhutemas. This article examines antecedents that contribute to a better understanding of the Chilean and South American avant-garde movements in light of intersecting and partial references to the Bauhaus and, most importantly, to the original constructivist movement, an issue that has received very little scrutiny so far.
