Abstract
The article analyses the play Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman. The text identifies some complexities of violence and trauma. This analysis is used to expose some possibilities, challenges and limitations the law faces while understanding and dealing with both phenomena (violence and trauma). The text stars with the problem of the language in the play, which speaks of the difficulties of talking about the violent events and their consequences on the person. Then, it highlights the repetition as a distinctive element of trauma, and finally it will be argued that language and repetition
develop a special way of contemplation of the trauma. Based on these considerations it will be proposed that law can be a space for representation under certain conditions which make possible the repetition, contemplation and use of language for dealing with trauma.
