PLAUTUS AND TERENCE IN AUSONIUS: MEANING OF THE THEATRICAL TEXT IN LATE ANTIQUITY

Abstract

Late Antiquity absorbed canonical texts with different purposes, including cultivating tradition as an instrument of political restoration and formation of bureaucratic hierarchies, among others. In order to accomplish this, the work of grammarians and rhetores that animated the late-imperial intellectual circles was vital. Plautus and Terence, as canonical authors, were carefully studied to illuminate linguistic or philological issues. This fact thoroughly explains why Ausonius includes these ancient playwrights in his work. The present article analyzes the Ausonian varietas focusing on the inclusion of Plautus, Terence and Afranius in the work of this renowned author of togatas comedies.
