Persistencia en los estudios de doctorado: revisión de literatura

Resumen
La masificación y la prolongación correlativa de los estudios universitarios de posgrado (maestría y doctorado) han generado un inquietante problema individual y social de abandono de tal amplitud, que podría ser más grande que la registrada en los estudios universitarios de pregrado. El fenómeno de la persistencia y la no persistencia en los estudios de doctorado no es nuevo; diversos estudios sobre este asunto han sido publicados desde comienzos de los años 60 en Estados Unidos, y, en menor medida, en otros contextos; hoy disponemos de una amplia literatura al respecto. El artículo expone cuatro grandes aspectos relacionados con el tema: a) concepto de persistencia, en dos sentidos (general y específico sistemático); b) sentidos de conceptos asociados a la no persistencia (no persistencia, deserción y abandono estudiantil); c) estado de la investigación sobre persistencia y no persistencia en los estudios de doctorado, según los estudios “descriptivos”, “teóricos”, asociados a la investigación y redacción de la tesis doctoral (ABD, all but dissertation); y d) conclusiones desde dos perspectivas: los resultados de la revisión documental y la justificación e importancia de estudiar este complejo fenómeno universitario desde el sentido individual de los estudiantes. Se aplicó un procedimiento metodológico de revisión de los escritos, “revisión de literatura” (review of literature).
