Abstract

Cities are the repositories of the memories of the societies that precede us. Architects and urban planners have a responsibility to understand these memories, to prevent their disappearance, and to comprehend the role they play in the structures of contemporary urban society. Since the birth, at the time of the industrial revolution, of a new, unknown, city, architects, economists, administrators, sociologists and, later, urban planners have sought out an analytical key to unlock the door to the City. Starting in the 1960s the complex link between preliminary social-scientific analysis and the Project, has been the subject of a body of research that has contributed powerful theories and methodologies for urban analysis.
