Abstract
This article addresses the dichotomies that arise during research in architecture that are gradually resolved through a dialectic process. One of the conflicts is the initial dependency, which is then subsequently overcome, on the past. Another is the ability to define the object of study by identifying small events. Appearance and background as well as the subject and the ideas are opposite areas; they are two levels of approaching the subject being studied that the researcher should move between. In order to demonstrate this, the text is supported by several analogies coming from other creative areas such as painting, literature, or cinema.
