The metro network. Transformation patterns near the Santiago Metro stations (Chile)

Abstract

The metro is a type of urban infrastructure that has the potential to integrate a network of public spaces and built-up fabric in the city. This is explored in the Santiago Metro, taking line 3 as a case study. With the morphological analysis of the stations’ surroundings, the initial urban proposal for this system is contrasted with its current design guidelines. This describes ways in which Santiago has grown and the strategies used for the metro’s insertion, which reveals the current preference for the confinement and autonomy of the network.
