Aims and scope

Naturaleza y Sociedad. Desafíos Medioambientales is a diamond open access* journal published by the Vice-Presidency of Research and Creation of the Universidad de los Andes, Colombia. In the context of the environmental crisis facing the planet, and given the importance of research and publications on this issue, we seek to contribute to current discussions with high-quality content edited and published by a Latin American journal. Addressing environmental problems and challenges requires the participation of all researchers who, from different subject areas and multiple approaches, reflect on the nature/human being relationship. This is why Naturaleza y Sociedad. Desafíos Medioambientales is a multi- and interdisciplinary journal and a university project (rather than a school, department, or center one).

Aiming to participate in regional and international debates on this topic, the journal seeks to publish original articles of excellent academic quality produced in Latin America and other parts of the world. It releases three issues per year, as well as just-accepted and ahead-of-print articles** on a regular basis. Proposals can be submitted in Spanish, English, or Portuguese, bilingual versions are also received; article metadata is always published in these three languages. With the purpose of giving our readers access to valuable content written in a language other than those mentioned above, the journal will consider translating it for publication.

It is aimed at academics, educators, researchers, and professionals interested in the nature-human relationship, especially those focused on global environmental challenges and issues. Given its interdisciplinary approach and commitment to analyzing these challenges from various perspectives, its audience also includes students and experts from fields such as environmental sciences, biology, ecology, geography, environmental economics, sociology, and anthropology, among other related disciplines.

In the same spirit of contributing in a comprehensive manner to contemporary discussions involving nature, the environment, and society, the journal seeks to enrich its issues by making room for another type of content in an academic dissemination section we have called Dialogues. Its contents are aimed at diverse audiences; multiple actors can submit Dialogues content, since the objective here is to promote dialogue on topics of broad interest to academics, communities, teachers, students, public policymakers, among others. Dialogues section has an ample typology: we publish interviews, papers, short reflection articles, working papers, partial research results, photo essays, and commented exhibitions, among others, which can be in text or multimedia format.

For these cases, the journal releases the metadata of the contents (title, author/authors, abstract, and keywords). Ahead-of-print publications are articles that have already been peer-reviewed, are in their final version, and are published on the journal’s website ahead of the issue that will finally contain them. Lastly, there are articles published in a regular issue according to the periodicity of the journal.
