Abstract
Climate change seriously affects forests worldwide, reducing their adaptive capacity and increasing their vulnerability. The Kawí Tamiruyé plot, located in the Sierra Tarahumara (Mexico), is a strategic site to study these variations. The main objective of this research is to document the investigations carried out between 2021 and 2024. Novel findings on the use of drones were found in the areas of knowledge application within the experimental area: response to fire detected by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI); generation of scientific knowledge to calculate precise metrics of area and canopy perimeter; and determination of ecological indices that account for changes in forest structure, with ecological dominance of Pinus engelmannii and Juniperus deppeana. Likewise, an incipient but promising infrastructure to collect meteorological data is reported. In addition, ongoing research has been documented with drone flights since March 23, 2021, and bi-weekly and monthly xylogenesis sampling has been conducted for the past 18 months. The lessons learned highlight the importance of understanding how forests respond to climate change and disturbances, providing crucial information for developing adaptation and mitigation strategies.
