Please note all sources cited in the main text must be included in the reference list, and all sources included in the reference list must be cited within the main text.
In-text citation
Use author surname(s) and the date of publication for citing sources within the text. There are three models to compose a citation of this sort:
Author surname(s) and date of publication enclosed in parentheses
- A study suggests (Moldowan, 2019)…
Please note a comma follows the author surname(s).
Author surname(s) in the running text, date of publication enclosed in parentheses
- As Moldowan found (2019)…
Author surname(s) and date of publication in the running text
- In 2019, Moldowan showed that…
Here are a few examples of in-text citation of frequently used source types.
Works by two authors
- A study suggest (Vicuña & González, 2021)…
- Vicuña and González (2021) found…
- In 2021, Vicuña and González proposed…
Use “and” to bind author surnames when included in the running text, and use “&” to bind them in enclosed parenthesis.
Works by three or more authors
- A study suggest (Donegan et al., 2020)…
- Donegan et al. (2020) found…
- In 2020, Donegan et al. proposed…
First author’s surname is followed by “et al.”. Note this is an abbreviation of the latin expression et alia, and must include a point after “al.”
Multiple works by the same author
- In numerous studies (Miller, 2007, 2014, 2015)…
- According to Miller (2007, 2014, 2015)…
- In many of her works from 2007, 2014 and 2015, Miller argues…
The dates of publication of the author’s works must be listed. When including the dates in the running text, use a “and” to bind the last date. When listing the dates in enclosed parenthesis, use a comma to separate each date.
Multiple works by the same author published in the same year
- In numerous studies (Inague, 2020a, 2020b)…
- Inague (2020a, 2020b) argues…
- Inague’s findings in 2020a and 2020b show…
Use a, b, c, etc. to differentiate each work. These must follow the date of publication, no space in between.
Multiple works by different authors
- As shown in previous studies (Donegan et al., 2020; Inague, 2020a, 2020b; Moldowan, 2019; Vicuña & González, 2021)…
For citing multiple works in enclosed parenthesis list the works in alphabetical order. Use a semicolon to separate each work.
