Time and Work in Platform Capitalism: Temporal Experiences in Delivery Labor

Abstract

The historical evolution of capitalism has been intrinsically linked to major technological transformations that have reshaped labor relations and redefined social temporality. The post-Fordist era, alongside the expansion of the digital sphere, has given rise to platform capitalism, characterized by the proliferation of digital applications that are restructuring both production and consumption. Within this framework, technological mediation and algorithmic control dictate work rhythms and schedules, fostering perpetual connectivity, labor flexibilization, and intensified competition. This study examines the temporal experiences of delivery workers on platforms such as Glovo, Uber Eats, Stuart, and Deliveroo in Spain. The analysis is grounded in existing literature on temporality in contemporary societies and digital labor, establishing a conceptual framework based on the notions of temporal hybridization, acceleration, densification, and time-as-a-resource. These concepts are essential for understanding emerging labor dynamics and the control mechanisms embedded in platform-based work. Through an analysis of 49 in-depth interviews with delivery workers conducted across two distinct periods, the study combines discourse analysis, literature review, and theoretical development to identify the specific temporal structures shaping platform labor. By critically engaging with existing debates on labor temporality, this research proposes a new category of work temporality that captures the distinct temporalities and subjectivities produced within platform-based labor systems.
