Abstract

In this article, the political and strategic pertinence of the EZLN to transcendits territorial confinement in Chiapas and its discursive confinement out of theinstitutional parameters of the political arena is discussed. The massmobilisation of supporters and indigenous leaders of the EZLN from SanCristóbal de las Casas towards Mexico City is the means used by theZapatistas to undergo such phenomenal task. From there lessons can bedrawn regarding the way in which it exposed the institutional coherence, theopenness and will to negotiate of Zedillo (1994-2000) and Fox (2000-2006) administrations.

Such lessons are explored using discourse analytical methodologies that readmoments of Zapatista political literature. In these moments one can perceivethe signifiers and concepts of the Zapatista popular, rebel and indigenousvision. The ideas provided by this article offer a renewed reading of thecontemporary Mexican ethnic and political conflict. The latter can also beextrapolated to look at other conflicts of a similar nature in the region.
