Abstract

The text makes a survey of the origin and evolution of the conceptof tolerance. It also makes a critical reading of its use along time.Form the religious use of the notion, to the classical literature onthe subject, to the contemporary liberal thought, the articlestudies the different meanings of tolerance, showing continuitiesand changes. It then proposes an alternative concept that eludesits negative connotations and is compatible with democraticculture, and it ends with a reflection about the Colombiancontext.
