Presentation

Voces y Silencios: Revista Latinoamericana de Educación is an academic, peer-reviewed, electronic, and diamond open access journal* dedicated to the study and dialogue on questions and problems in education, pedagogy, and human development. The journal declares an emphasis on topics that are of particular interest to education in Latin America, although it welcomes contributions in which these areas are presented and discussed in other parts of the world. It is oriented to an audience of researchers, teachers, managers, and other professionals working in education, both in formal educational institutions and in policy-making institutions, non-governmental organizations, and non-formal and informal education spaces. The journal publishes articles in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. It was published every six months from 2010 to 2023 and from 2024 it is published every four months, at the beginning of each period: January-April, May-August, September-December.

Voces y Silencios: Revista Latinoamericana de Educación is published by the Faculty of Education of the Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia.

Policy of democratization of production and access to knowledge.

Voces y Silencios: Revista Latinoamericana de Educación is committed to the social and democratic function of the production of knowledge, from the perspective of the roles of both, those who read and those who write. As for those who read, we want our journal to reach as many interested people as possible, without any kind of obstacle. Therefore, we adhere to an diamond open access policy: published works are easily accessible online without the need to register or enter any kind of information; they are freely available to anyone, and can be shared and used without any restriction, as long as the original source of publication is cited, i.e. Voces y Silencios: Revista Latinoamericana de Educación, and of course, the respective author.

As for those who write, Voces y Silencios: Revista Latinoamericana de Educación values the diversity of forms of research and production of scientific knowledge. Therefore, it does not privilege any general research approach, beyond the criteria of rigor and originality. Additionally, it has several sections - Empirical research articles and literature reviews, Approaches, and Testimonials - in order to provide access to different forms of knowledge production generated in different contexts, whose publication is useful for the world of education, pedagogy, and human development.

Types of published articles

Files to be sent

The author(s) of the article should send at least two separate files.

The first one, which has been called “Title Page”, should include the title of the article in Spanish, English, and Portuguese; the name of the author(s); the complete institutional affiliation; the Author's Note (brief information on academic background, fields of interest and recent publications); the abbreviated title (a short title that goes in the header of each page), the section of the journal to which the manuscript is submitted, brief information about the origin of the text and contact information of the author. To see an example of how this information can be presented, click here.

The second file, which has been named "Body of the Manuscript", should again include the title of the article in Spanish, English, and Portuguese; the abstract in Spanish, English, and Portuguese; three to five keywords in Spanish, English, and Portuguese under the corresponding abstract, the text of the article and the references.

  1. Empirical research articles

Correspond to quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research results. Articles should present a clear and well-founded research question, focused on recent debates in education, pedagogy, and human development. Empirical research articles also include those that report on the development of measurement instruments or the effectiveness of research methodologies or educational interventions. Within these, instrument validations are considered, which should consider at least the incorporation of internal and external validity, reliability, and complementary analysis, as well as the development of curricula, interventions, and work strategies in school contexts.

The length of empirical research articles should be a minimum of 6,000 and a maximum of 8,000 words, excluding the list of references. Its structure includes a title abstract, and keywords in Spanish, English, and Portuguese; introduction; method; results; discussion and conclusions; and references in APA seventh edition. The text should be written in Times New Roman, 12-point font, and if it contains tables or figures, in addition to including them in the text, they should be sent in the original format separately. If there are annexes, include them in a separate file after indicating their presence in the "Body of the manuscript". If there is more than one annex, name the first Annex A, the second Annex B, and so on. Annexes should appear in the order in which they are mentioned in the paper. Each annex starts on a new page. Articles should be submitted through the journal's OJS platform.

  1. Literature Reviews

These correspond to systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses. This type of publication represents a fundamental contribution to the development of research in education, pedagogy, and human development, and also to its various professional applications.

Literature reviews are critical evaluations of already published material. Therefore, these articles should organize, integrate, and evaluate previously published materials, in order to analyze the progress of research and its conclusions. Literature reviews should include the following components: 1) define a problem; 2) summarize previous research to inform their readers about the state of the research; 3) identify relationships, contradictions, gaps, and inconsistencies in the literature; and 4) suggest future steps to solve the identified problem. The results of literature reviews should present a logical and critical organization, such as grouping the reported research according to the methodology used, or theories or concepts guiding the research.

Types of literature reviews considered for publication:

a. Systematic literature reviews: these are reviews that give an account of the state of the art regarding a particular topic, including a critical evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the studies reviewed, as well as a statement regarding crucial aspects that should be addressed in future research. Systematic reviews that attempt to establish connections between different areas of knowledge will be especially valued.

b. Meta-analyses: meet the same criteria as systematic literature reviews, but also include the use of statistical techniques to integrate and summarize the results of the studies included in the review.

The length of literature review articles should be a minimum of 6,000 and a maximum of 8,000 words, except for the list of references. Its structure includes a title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, introduction, method, results, discussion and conclusions, and references in APA seventh edition. The text should be written in Times New Roman 12-point font and, if it contains tables or figures, in addition to including them in the text, they should be sent in the original format separately. Articles should be submitted through the journal's OJS platform.

Guidelines for preparing this type of manuscript can be found here.

  1. Approach

This type of theoretical research article is a space for discussing ideas and theoretical proposals from a reflective and propositional point of view, supported by a systematic analysis of sources. The articles in this section may be more speculative in nature than an empirical research article or a literature review would normally allow. Likewise, they may focus on relevant aspects of education, pedagogy, and human development, both in their research, academic and disciplinary fields, as well as on reflections arising from the trajectory of outstanding educators or on other important topics. The opinions expressed should be balanced, substantiated, and evidence-based. Its objective is to stimulate discussion on the development of the educational and pedagogical field, particularly in those aspects relevant to the Latin American context.

The length of the approach articles should be a minimum of 6,000 and a maximum of 8,000 words, except for the list of references. Its structure includes a title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, as well as an introduction, development, conclusion, and list of references in APA 7th edition. The text must be written in Times New Roman 12-point font and, if it contains tables or figures, in addition to including them in the text, they must be sent in the original format separately. Articles should be submitted through the journal's OJS platform.

Guidelines for preparing this type of manuscript can be found here.

  1. Testimonials

These are texts written by people directly involved in educational activities, in which they describe in detail experiences, pedagogical and didactic resources, or innovations in educational practice that have been particularly significant, because they are shocking experiences that generate new learning through reflection, or because they generate unexpected reactions in participants, communities or observers. These texts may be written in the first person, since they are primarily a reflection on the practice or resource under analysis, carried out by the person (or persons) who narrate it in the text.

In addition to describing the practice, the purpose of the testimony is to critically appropriate the experience and the knowledge resulting from it, based on a theoretical understanding and a reflective exercise on the transformative potential of what is described. Thus, a manuscript submitted to the testimony section is not simply a collection of materials or opinions but must present an analytical and critical stance on the experience. This type of article can be understood as a narrative reconstruction of experiences, in which the meaning of these experiences is revealed through their arrangement, description, and interpretation.

The length of Testimonials articles should be a minimum of 4,000 and a maximum of 6,000 words, except for the list of references. Its structure includes a title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish, English, and Portuguese; as well as the list of references in APA 7th edition. The text should be written in Times New Roman 12-point font and, if it contains tables or figures, in addition to including them in the text, they should be sent in the original format separately. Articles should be sent through the journal's OJS platform.
