Abstract
Environmental problems and the tensions stemming from productive development are topics that need to be examined within the Latin American environmental and climate change agenda. Collaboration among science, government, and the community is crucial for creating, implementing, and monitoring public environmental policies aimed at reducing biodiversity loss in the region. Through a discussion with Carlos Joly—biologist, researcher, and renowned ecologist—the experience of the Biota Program in Brazil is presented as a model case for policies on the conservation and restoration of the Atlantic Forest and its ecosystems. The exchange highlights the importance of communicating science beyond academia, along with postgraduate training and outreach strategies designed to raise awareness and protect the environment. The expert emphasizes the complexity of the factors involved in this issue, which influence whether environmental policies are maintained or disrupted amid political circumstances and legislative changes. In this context, the interview explores restoration projects carried out in municipalities in São Paulo state, as well as sectoral debates arising from Brazil’s production model, potential alternatives, and the agenda for discussion at COP30.
