Abstract

The article "Amazonas de derechos" explores the legal status of the Amazon River as it flows through different countries with varied legal systems. In Ecuador, the tributaries of the Amazon have legal rights according to the 2008 Constitution, while in Peru and Brazil, the river is considered an inanimate object of legal regulation. In Colombia, the Supreme Court declared in 2018 that the Amazon River is a legal subject with rights. The documentary "Jatun Yacu – Amazonas de los derechos" combines interviews with academics, activists, and indigenous leaders, along with documentary footage of the river, to explore the meaning and implications of granting legal rights to a river.
